Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Vivitar Wireless Shutter Release (Fits Canon 40D/50D) VIV-RC-200-40DCustomer Review: Well made, extra features Summary: 5 Stars
Hey -- I can be in group photos again! I'm usually the one taking the picture and, yes, I can use the self timer, but it's nice to be able to take it when I want, or take multiple pictures without running back to the camera.
This wireless remote comes in two parts: the transmitter (what you use to trigger the shutter) and the receiver (what plugs into the camera). The receiver has a cord that plugs into the shutter release port on the side of the camera. It can mount on top of the camera (where an external flash goes).
All in all, it seems to be well made and worked fine for me (after I sync'd the receiver and transmitter), however there's a quirk.
There's two LED lights on the receiver so you can see when it is on and when it is senses that you're pressing the button on the remote. That's good, but the quirk is that the cord that goes from the receiver to the camera plugs right between the two LEDs and partially blocked my view of the them when I put the receiver on top of the camera. And since the cable is coming out towards the front, it seems to get in the way of the lens. I think it would be better if the plug came out the side or back of the receiver so it wasn't in the way.
I expected a simple shutter release -- push the button and it takes a picture. Yes, it does that, but it does a couple of extra tricks along the way too. First, the transmitter has a 2 second delay setting, so if you're in the picture you have time to pose after you press the button on the remote. Also, the receiver can be operated as a wired remote (without the transmitter) -- even if the batteries are dead.
I haven't tried to see how far away the receiver can still get signals from the remote, but it's by radio waves and I was able to walk a couple of rooms away and take a picture.
So, good quality and a few extra features outweigh the little quirks for me.
A few details from the package (that should be in the Amazon description).
